There has been a German Christmas Market in Shanghai for several years, which is officially called the "Christkindlmarkt". Especially in the run-up to Christmas, when you are flooded with news from friends from home, the photos show the Christmas biscuit bakery, Advent wreaths with lit candles, snowy landscapes, which this year exceptionally already exist in December, the Christmas market here is a nice consolation when feeling homesick. Interestingly, I am probably the only one from my circle of friends who can go to a Christmas market this year without a care, as all markets at home are closed due to the pandemic. The Christmas market in Shanghai is right next to a church, has a square with a nostalgic children's carousel, Christmas tree and Christmas pyramid as well as a street lined with stalls where you can get many typical things from Germany: Nuremberg gingerbread, vineyard peach liqueur from the Moselle, Thuringian Rostbratwurst, Krakow, mulled wine , Erzgebirge carvings, wooden toys, etc. It's expensive by Chinese standards: Bratwurst for 55 yuan (8 euros). But you get two sausages with sauerkraut and rolls, so a small meal and not just a snack. Everything, including the mulled wine, really tastes like it was originally from Germany. No wonder it's all imported. The market is on the Bund, near Waibaidu Bridge, behind the park where the former British consulate was, on Yuanmingyuan Road between Union Church and the Peninsula Hotel.
