Coffee Shop Walking Tour

Shanghai has 7,000 cafés, not counting international chains such as Starbucks, which has 900 branches in the city and is therefore the most densely populated in the world. Tea is associated with China, but the Chinese have discovered coffee and are enthusiastic about it. It's fun to discover the so-called boutique cafés and be amazed. From bohemian-like small, even tiny, lovingly designed oases to the smallest rooms, you will find countless variations between French Concession and Bund, in which not only enjoying the coffee, but also discovering these small worlds in the alleys and side streets is a very special experience. My tour started at Fuxing Park. The “MapsMe” app was particularly helpful because cafés are clearly marked on the map. I actually had a fixed goal, but the app encouraged me to take enriching detours and detours. I found all the cafés in the following photos in just one square, on Xiangshan Rd, Nachang Rd and Sinan Rd.

Shanghai has a long coffee history. The first shiploads of coffee beans came to the city 170 years ago. According to Sun Ying, a Shanghai-based literary scholar who published the Coffee Map of Modern Shanghai and Coffee Literature, the words "five packs of Jiafei beans, 70 jin (35,000 g) per pack" in one were dated May 18, 1844 List of imported goods found. In 1851, a Cantonese businessman opened the first cafe in Shanghai, Shenjang Cafe, which moved to Fuzhou Rd. in 1883 and was renamed Xinghualou. It still exists today and has since become a multi-storey restaurant. It doesn't show the nostalgia, but at least this shop has witnessed the entire modern development of Shanghai.
